Convergence, alignment, entrainment, synchrony, accommodation; all of these terms are used to describe how people coordinate their behaviour over the course of an interaction. This phenomenon is observed in many different modalities, and is studied by researchers from many different fields. However, there seems to be little to no consensus on whether these different terms denote one overarching phenomenon, or whether they describe slightly different ways of coordination in interaction. In this workshop we want to gather researchers from multiple disciplines to discuss what “alignment” is, and how we can make sure we’re all talking about the same thing.
Some questions we would like to discuss in our workshop include
  • Is alignment one phenomenon, or a set of (related?) phenomena?
  • How can different fields contribute to understanding alignment? Is there a discrepancy in understanding of alignment between fields or in different modalities?
  • What is the relationship between alignment in different modalities and at different levels?
  • Do researchers from different labs or academic circles think about alignment differently?
  • Is there the risk of different labs studying the same phenomenon from different perspectives but not talking to each other?
  • If that is the case, how can information flow in the field be improved?
  • Are data and methods used to quantify alignment comparable across different modalities?

Travel Information

This workshop is a satellite event of the SNL conference in Marseille. Our workshop is going to be held at the Laboratoire Parole et Langage, 5 Avenue Pasteur, Aix-en-Provence, 13100 France

Aix-en-Provence is a beautiful small town in the South of France very close to Marseille.
The nearest hubs for long distance travel are:
Train
Aix: Aix-en-Provence TGV
Marseille: Marseille Saint-Charles
Plane
Marseille-Provence Airport
There are buses to take you to your accommodation in either Aix or Marseille.

There may be more options for accommodation in Marseille than in Aix-en-Provence. There are buses between Marseille and Aix that take around 30-40 minutes (depending on traffic). The ticket costs 7€ one way. It’s a 20 minute walk from the bus station in Aix to the Laboratoire Parole et Langage.

We wholeheartedly recommend staying the weekend after the workshop (if you are not going to SNL anyways) to enjoy the nature and culture of Provence. And, yes, late October is still warm enough for a swim in the sea.

FAQ

What you need to know?

Q: Do you provide travel grants?

Unfortunately we don’t have the funds to make travel grants available. Similarly, we cannot provide accommodation. We will however provide lunch and snacks at the workshop.

Q: Who can attend?

Anyone who is interested in or working on phenomena related to alignment, is welcome to attend, regardless of the stage of their career.

Q: Do I have to present a poster if I want to attend?

No, you’re more than welcome to attend without presenting!

Q: Can I present a poster online?

Yes, we will set up an online poster platform for people attending virutally. Please keep in mind that as always with online posters we expect a smaller audience/reduced feedback.

Q: Can I present work-in-progress or previously presented work?

Yes, you are welcome to present work-in-progress, experiment ideas, and previously presented work, as long as it fits the workshop theme.

Q: Can I submit an abstract for a talk?

No, unfortunately not. We have many invited speakers who are giving talks, which unfortunately means we have no room for additional talks in our program. We strongly encourage you to submit an abstract for a poster presentation, as there will be plenty of time for presenting and discussion during the poster session.
